I met Zoe in the beginning of one of the most vulnerable and stressful times in my life.

She approached me to write a story to help my husband and I after seeing our Go Fund Me page after I was diagnosed with cancer and faced a hysterectomy at 30, with no children.

Zoe was professional, compassionate, empathetic and so supportive throughout my whole journey. The story she wrote for us was published by multiple publications, and she really made sure our story was heard.

I can not thank her enough for her ongoing support throughout that time, and her continued friendship that blossomed out of an awful situation.

Lauren Wilkin

Interviewee

I don’t even know where to start. Zoe is not only an incredible journalist, she is also an amazing person who I will be forever grateful for.

Zoe reached out to me when she noticed my endometriosis awareness post being shared on social media. Although we are the other side of the world from each other, we connected instantly over messenger.

She very professionally covered my story which led to it going worldwide and being noticed by top specialists in different countries. Still over a year later, our story is being shared far and wide.

Zoe has stayed in touch since day one and since become a dear friend of mine who I respect so much. Without Zoe and her journalism skills, life would be boring!!! She is so passionate and dedicated. Thankyou for being YOU.

I engaged Zoe to work on my new start up brand! I have been following Zoe’s work on social media for a while and have always been impressed with her storytelling.

I cannot speak more highly of Zoe’s work! If you’re looking for someone who goes above and beyond writing copy, she is your girl. She will make clever and strategic writing choices to make your business meet its goal.

She’s not your plain Jane copywriter. I have used other copywriters before, and Zoe is highly skilled by a long shot. The best part is she’s efficient, and understands SEO too, so she’ll weave that in seamlessly.

Zoe took my very scientific, technical and dull copy and made it so much more sellable, relatable and readable. My products are fantastic, but the way Zoe spins the words takes my products to an even higher level!

I am so grateful I found you. Thank you, you are worth your weight in gold!

Proofreading and Editing Testimonials

Working with Zoe was a genuine pleasure. She brought a thoughtful, grounded perspective to my content—one that clearly comes from lived experience and deep empathy. Her edits were sharp, insightful, and respectful of my voice, but what stood out most was the way she could intuitively grasp what I was trying to say and make it clearer, more human, and more effective.

Zoe’s perspective as a disabled freelancer living with chronic illness gave her a sensitivity that made a real difference. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Zoe to anyone looking for an editor who brings both skill and soul to their work.

Zoe Simmons was an exceptional host and researcher during her time presenting on the inaugural season of Laneway – A CTV+ news project. Zoe’s integrity and dedication to sharing underrepresented stories is extremely important in our current news climate. She offers unique perspectives through her lived experiences and it is clear these experiences drive her search for important stories; in particular those centering issues around disability, mental health and LGBTQ+ and gender identity. Zoe was a pleasure to work with on set, she always had a friendly demeanor and was an invaluable member of our crew. I look forward to working with her again on upcoming seasons and future projects.

I had the privilege of interviewing Zoe while developing a mental health module for undergraduate physiotherapy students. Her passion, authenticity and openness about her lived experiences of mental health challenges and disability really helped to inform our project, and she brings such a unique and critical perspective to this space. Her contribution was invaluable, and I’m deeply grateful for her involvement. I’d highly recommend her for any public speaking, disability advocacy, or media work, and am looking forward to the opportunity to work with her again!

Soph Shephard

APA Titled Pain Physiotherapist, Vive Pain & Fatigue

Zoe Simmons shared her story as part of the She’s the Boss and Stories that Stir® International Women’s Day event. She was real, raw and had me on the edge of my seat listening to her every word. I learnt a lot from listening to her story and left feeling more empathy for what people with disabilities go through. I also learnt some simple ways I can make sure my events are inclusive and inviting for those who live with a disability. I was very inspired by her courage and determination and am grateful I was given the opportunity to see the world from her perspective.

Her ability to connect with the audience and elevate awareness of best practices for DES  is truly commendable. We are grateful for her ongoing contributions to our work.

Simon Brown

CEO, CoAct

Zoe spoke articulately and movingly from her perspective as a seasoned journalist in the disability space, and as a neurodivergent and disabled person.  One of Zoe’s many strengths as a public speaker is her fierce authenticity and generosity.  In the training, speaking for the first time to a team of relationship educators from across the state, Zoe outlined what it feels like to experience ableism in the world and in the work place; moreover what she herself has experienced in purportedly ‘safe’ spaces, such as award ceremonies for disabled professionals – and how easy it is to continue to perpetuate ableism, particularly within large service systems in the disability, mental health, and education sectors.

In the days following the training, we have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from colleagues about Zoe’s speech.  Significantly, our organisation is now exploring next steps and on-going training to support our teams to deliver neurodivergent-affirming and welcoming groupwork programs across our 21 centres in NSW.

Bree Taylor

Senior Trainer, Ermha 365

My name is Zoe Houstein, and I am the Project Manager at Women With Disabilities Australia (WWDA). We represent more than two million disabled women, girls and gender-diverse people across Australia—because disabled women and gender-diverse people experience further discrimination and barriers, and significantly less representation in leadership and decision-making spaces. Our work is grounded in a human rights framework that links gender and disability to civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. Our role is to take part in systemic change that empowers disabled women and gender-diverse people, and creates greater awareness among governments and other organisations about issues that impact the disability community, and how they can do better to support disability rights and inclusion.

Zoe Simmons has been working with Women With Disabilities Australia since 2021. During this time, she has played an integral role with multiple projects, including being a member of the 2022 National Online Leadership Summit Co-Design Committee, which worked towards improving and facilitating leadership opportunities for disabled women, girls, gender-diverse and non-binary people. She is also a member of the Our Site 2.0 Project Steering Committee, which works to address stigma, ableism, and improve disabled experiences—including the significantly higher rates of violence that disabled women and gender-diverse people experience.

Zoe has also been a dedicated researcher and writer for our organisation, including assisting with the LEAD Leadership Statement, and writing content for Neve. Neve is a ground-breaking website co-designed by women, girls and gender-diverse people with disabilities. It explores information through an easy-to-understand disabled lens that focuses on sex, relationships, wellbeing and practical support—as well as highlights significant challenges and barriers that exclusively impact the disabled community. Neve is designed to help disabled women feel supported, empowered, with 70+ topics, including resources and advice on what to do in difficult or dangerous situations. The community-led content has already had a huge impact—and Zoe’s contributions included body image, supporting sexual and reproductive rights for disabled women, microaggressions and how to safely respond to them, mental health and gender-based violence, ableism and gender, autism and gender-based violence, as well as writing WWDA’s diversity statement. As part of the LEAD Leadership Statement, Zoe worked on various sections of the Leadership Toolkit, including the importance of diverse storytelling, the power of lived experience and community, and self and collective care.

Zoe has also written numerous blogs for WWDA over the years, exploring disability leadership and its barriers, especially when you’re experiencing chronic pain and disability, as well as the vital importance of genuine accessibility in a post-COVID world.

Collectively, this work is incredibly important, as disabled women, girls and gender-diverse disabled people are not represented or included in leadership spaces and decision-making forums. Disabled women often can’t “lead” simply because there are rarely any opportunities for meaningful leadership opportunities, programs and training—and those opportunities are rarely accessible or flexible. Alongside WWDA, Zoe’s work has helped transform traditional views of leadership, and how this space can become more inclusive for the disabled community, especially those who experience further marginalisation.

Zoe is an excellent writer and a passionate advocate who always works towards making a difference in the world. She fights for change, and I sincerely hope you will give her the opportunity to continue to do this at a state level.

Zoe is not only an excellent writer—she’s a passionate advocate who always works her best to ensure diverse disabled perspectives are included. She fights to create change—and I sincerely hope you will give her the opportunity to do so through this.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
