I’ll admit: I’m a massive word nerd
For as long as I can remember, I’ve been enthralled with words.
I love their simplicity.
I love the meaning they convey.
I love their power—and I love the emotions they can evoke.
Growing up, I wanted to be an author. And a scientist. And a rockstar. But eventually, I became a journalist—because I believe words can truly make a difference.
And in fact, that’s why I write: to make a difference.
“I believe writing can change the world: or at least, someone’s world. I want to be a part of that.”
~ Zoe Simmons
How I began my career
I published my first article in 2011 at the tender age of 16—and I’ve never looked back
With a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Wollongong, and a range of experience across numerous sectors—like health, mental health, lifestyle, entertainment, hospitality, health, beauty, law and much more—I have the know-how to craft all kinds of content.

And I can use that power to make strategic decisions for you and your business.
My content has been featured all around the globe.
From having a story featured on the Today Show, to contributing to CNN, Good Morning America, Four Corners, the ABC and the BBC, I’m a pro at creating content and crafting words that make readers feel.
Delving deeper into my experience
So, who is Zoe Simmons?
It’s understandable you might want to know a little more before working with me. And the good news is: I’m an open book!
Zoe Simmons: the journalist
I published my very first articles way back in 2011, as a 16-year-old work experience student with my then-local newspaper, The Bay Post. Not only did I fall in love with storytelling: I realised I was quite good at it!
This led me to studying a Bachelor of Journalism at the University of Wollongong, where I was in the top 15% of my cohort. I completed my degree in 2016 with a distinction average, and a minor in philosophy.
During my time at the University of Wollongong, I worked as a multimedia journalist with UOW TV, and was the online editor and digital content manager of the Tertangala in my final year. I also completed two internships with Mamamia, and worked as a marketing volunteer with the Cancer Council NSW.
After uni, I worked briefly at the Daily Mail as a social media assistant, before pursuing freelance writing. Since then, I’ve been published hundreds of times around the globe.
Zoe Simmons: the copywriter and editor
I first tried my hand at copywriting back in 2017 with Complete Online Marketing. But it wasn’t until 2018 that I began to offer it as an official service as part of my business.
You see, while I’d technically done oodles of copywriting over the years, I didn’t realise it was called “copywriting”. While working for three years as a communications assistant for a forensic mental health organisation, I slowly built my copywriting and editing business part-time, before taking the leap into full-time business ownership in July 2021.
I love working with businesses of kinds; both as a copywriter, and as an editor. I love hearing why people love what they do. And I love to help businesses find their perfect words, so they can better connect with their audiences. Industries I’ve worked with include:
- Mental health
- Forensic mental health
- Women’s health
- Environmental conservation
And more. I’ve worked with a lot of seriously awesome brands, including Women With Disabilities Australia, Endometriosis Australia, Uniting VicTas (through Pencil & Crown) Reach Out, the Youth Disability Advocacy Service, Women’s Health Victoria, and a bunch of other names I’d love to drop, but can’t (thanks to non-disclosure agreements).
I like to make a positive impact in the world through my business, so much so that my work was recognised through winning Silver in the Young Female Entrepreneur of the Year Award category at the 2021 Stevie Awards for Women in Business.
Zoe Simmons: the author and poet
I’m currently working on my first book. It’s a collection of stories of survival (including my own) from the Black Summer bushfires of 2019/2020 from people in my hometown community on the NSW south coast. I am currently seeking representation and publication for this project.
I’ve had a short piece published in Kathy Divine’s 2019 Amazon best-selling book Golden Age Politics, where I talk about ethical journalism and its importance, and have a chapter about my experiences as a journalist in the Black Summer Bushfires in Occupational Therapy Australia’s Doing Our Best: Individual and Community Responses to Challenging Times.
I have two poems to be published in Beyond the Veil Press’s 2022 mental health anthology, Tea with my monster. My poems are about living with chronic pain, mental illness and anxiety, and how storytelling helps us heal.
I also had one of my poems, Clear Answers, listed as Highly Commended in the 2022 Pocketry Prize for Unpublished Poets. My poem was about my experiences following my last investigative surgery, where once again, I was told they didn’t know what was wrong with me, and couldn’t find answers to my extreme pain.
Zoe Simmons: the speaker
I was absolutely honoured to make my speaker debut at the 2021 National Young Writer’s Festival. I presented in the Journalism and Trauma: Keeping Safe in an Unsafe World panel, and did a live reading of my work for the Live Reading: Cringey Diaries segment.
I’ve also spoken on more than a dozen podcasts, as well as radio and TV, including the ABC, the BBC, i98 Radio, and Channel 10. I spoke on ABC radio about my experiences in the 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires, and was involved in an episode of Ladies, We Need To Talk About Sex about disability, chronic pain and sex.
In 2021, I also ran a workshop on the power of storytelling for mental health recovery (and how to do it safely) for a Carer’s Week event with Care Seekers Australia.
I’m incredibly eager to build my experience as a speaker, so if you have an event, and you’d like me to be involved, please get in touch.

TESTIMONIALS AND CLIENT LOVE
“I engaged Zoe Simmons to work on my new start up brand. I’d been following her work for a while and have always been impressed with her storytelling. I cannot speak highly enough of Zoe’s work! If you’re looking for someone who goes above and beyond writing copy, she is your girl! She will make clever and strategic writing choices to make your business meet it’s goal. She’s not your plain Jane copywriter. She’s efficient, and understands SEO and will weave that in seamlessly, too. Zoe took my very scientific, technical and dull copy, and made it so much more sellable, relatable, and readable. I am so grateful I found you! Thank you, you are worth your weight in gold.”
“I’m the commissioning editor for News Corp’s women’s network, and I have commissioned a number of stories through Zoe Simmons over the past few years. Not only is Zoe an incredibly skilled writer, she is also sensitive, compassionate and creative, and always files before deadline. She’s open to feedback, and a true joy to work with. Some of my most memorable commissions have been through Zoe, and I always know that a story is in good hands when Zoe is at the helm. I would unreservedly recomend her for all your writing and copywriting needs.”
I hired Zoe Simmons to do an edit and proofread of an annual report I was working on for an NGO here in the Northern Territory. She was very thorough and offered great suggestions throughout the document. I would definitely hire Zoe again! It was great to know my document was in safe hands.
